Here’s what you should know about how the card works:

Your new Scotiabank chip debit card is the same card you know and trust, but with the enhanced security of proven technology used worldwide. Your transactions are more secure than ever when you use your new chip card along with your Personal Identification Number (PIN) in a chip payment terminal or ATM.

When you receive your card:

You will need to PIN your new card at the branch upon collection. This process will activate it for usage.

How your chip and pin debit card works at chip-enabled terminals:

  1. Rather than swiping your card, it will be inserted into the terminal and left there for the entire transaction.  Removing the card before the screen display indicates will cancel the transaction.
  2. You will follow the prompts on the screen and enter your PIN to verify the transaction.
  3. When the transaction is complete, the screen will instruct you to remove your card
  4. Look for the Contactless symbol on the chip-enabled terminal and simply tap your Debit card for transactions USD$50 or less on the terminal. Your payment is processed in seconds.

The ScotiaCard with Visa Debit is an enhanced version of the existing ScotiaCard that allows you to access funds in your account to make purchases anywhere Visa is accepted. Now that you’re a part of Visa’s worldwide network, you’ll enjoy greater security and access.

As part of Scotiabank’s digital focus and with increased needs for protection against fraud, we want to go the extra mile to protect our customers. The new cards help to provide added security against counterfeit purchases or the use of lost and stolen cards. It puts you in control with enhanced security.

 

The CVV2 number is the three digits you can find on the back of your card. You may be asked to provide this number as a security measure when shopping online to confirm that you are in possession of the card. This is a precaution to avoid any fraudulent usage.

 

Now that we’ve added the most enhanced protection possible using chip technology, your card is valid until the month printed on the card. Once you’re close to the time when your new ScotiaCard Visa Debit expires, you’ll be issued a new one.

At stores – very easy to use: Insert the ScotiaCard VISA Debit in the Point Of Sale device and keep it in the device to enable electronic authorization. Follow the prompts on the screen and enter the PIN to verify transaction. When the transaction is complete, the screen will instruct to remove the card and wait for the receipt.  

No. Even though you can use the card wherever Visa is accepted, the funds must be available in your designated primary account to cover the cost of your purchases. Unlike a credit card, it’s not possible to defer your payments until later.
